Ozarks Technical Community College announced Monday the hiring of the school’s first director of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Daniel Ogunyemi started in the role Monday.
“More and more people from underrepresented groups are choosing OTC to further their education,” Dr. Hal Higdon, OTC chancellor, said in a press statement. “It’s important to have someone who focuses on making sure we are doing all we can to foster an equitable and supportive environment for our students and employees.”
OTC’s 12 county service region only has a population of 8% “non-white,” but the non-white enrollment of the OTC system is 18%.
“I want anyone from any background to know that they can come to OTC and get a great education,” Ogunyemi said in a statement. “In my new role, I will focus on finding the barriers to accessing an education at OTC and work to change them for the better.”
Ogunyemi has been a part-time psychology instructor for OTC. He most recently worked with Burrell Behavioral Health in diversity and inclusion for the mental health system.
