Springfield Contemporary Theatre is moving out of downtown Springfield in a move aimed at lowering overall costs and consolidating locations.
Officials with SCT announced they will be moving all of their operations into one location at 2025 East Chestnut Expressway, in east Springfield near the Killian Softball & Cooper Tennis Complexes.
The move is being made to help reduce overhead in the fallout of the pandemic’s impact on theatres. SCT currently rents three facilities for their operations, and the move will all everyone to come under one roof. It will also allow them to go from three rents and three utility payments to one.
Despite leaving their downtown location, SCT insists they are committed to being a part of downtown.
“We are committed to Downtown Springfield, and we continue our search for a permanent home base that will allow us to produce indoor productions in a safe and healthy situation for performers and audience as social distancing guidelines can be eased in the future,” SCT officials wrote in an email.
The theatre is asking for support on Giving Tuesday to make the move, with a $10,000 goal for building a virtual production studio and operations funds to guarantee the facility can stay open for a few years with the newly reduced costs.
