The Evangel women’s basketball team opens its 52nd season of varsity competition Friday (Oct. 30) evening with a 5:30 p.m. game against Kansas Christian College at the Ashcroft Center.
Friday’s contest will mark the first meeting of the two programs.
► Third-year head coach Megan Leuzinger enters the season with a career mark of 39-22 after guiding the Crusaders to their first NAIA National Tournament berth since 2011 last season; Evangel went 11-4 at the Ashcroft Center in 2019-20, following a 12-4 home campaign the previous year, giving Leuzinger a 23-8 overall mark at home.
► Sophomore Alexis Cauthon was named Heart Freshman of the Year and All-Heart Second Team after averaging 10.6 points per game as the Crusaders’ second-leading scorer in 2019-20.
► The Crusaders ranked 15th nationally in three-pointers with 255 for the year last season; individually, Cauthon ranked 20th with 78 three-pointers made, which was good for eighth on the Evangel single-season list.
► Junior Brianna Vogts was an honorable mention All-Heart selection last year after averaging 10.2 points per game; she finished just outside the top 20 in the Heart in scoring and rebounding, pulling down 5.2 boards per game as well.
► As a team, the Crusaders rated seventh in the nation in assists per game (17.129) and eighth in assist/turnover ratio (1.175) in 2019-20.
► Junior Bayley Harman averaged 9.4 points, 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game during conference play last season.
► Sadie Chisum‘s 101 assists as a freshman ranked sixth overall in the Heart Conference.
