Springfield Police Will Close Traffic to Square for Saturday Protest

The Springfield Police Department has said they will be closing the routes into the downtown square to traffic starting at 2 p.m. Saturday ahead of a scheduled 3 p.m. Black Lives Matter protest.

Only foot traffic will be allowed beyond those police barricades from 2 p.m. until the end of the event. (The areas closed to traffic are designated in red in the above photo of Park Central Square.)

The Springfield Police Department confirmed to OI information sent in an email from the Springfield Community Improvement District about police recommended closures of businesses.

“Upon notifying downtown businesses of the planned protest, officers did recommend to the businesses that if they are concerned, to consider to close by 2:00 and bring in outside furniture,” spokeswoman Jasmine Bailey told OI.

The Park Central Branch of the Springfield-Greene County Library has already announced they will be closing at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The “Protest Against Police Brutality For George Floyd” is being organized in part by a group called Radical Activists In Demand.
