A 20-year-old man has been taken into custody after entering the a Springfield area Walmart neighborhood market with a tactical rifle and a handgun.
The gunman reportedly walked in to the Walmart Neighborhood Market at 3150 West Republic Road wearing body armor and military fatigues. He pushed a cart around the store making comments to fleeing shoppers while recording himself on a cell phone.
A store manager pulled the fire alarm to evacuate the store, and the gunman then walked out of the store where an off-duty firefighter held him at gunpoint until police arrived on the scene.
Springfield police say they received the call around 4:09 p.m. and arrived on the scene in about three minutes and called the scene “chaotic.” The gunman surrendered to police who discovered he was carrying approximately 100 rounds of ammunition.
“His intent was not to cause peace or comfort to anybody that was in the business,” Lt. Mike Lucas said. “In fact, he’s lucky to be alive to be honest.”
