The red-hot Evangel volleyball team kept its perfect start to the 2020 season intact Tuesday evening, sweeping Baker in straight sets (25-12, 25-16, 25-19) at the Ashcroft Center to run its record to 4-0.
Daisy Eklund led all attackers with 12 kills, while Eryn Russell registered 24 digs to lead another strong defensive performance by the Crusaders, who improved to 2-0 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play with the win.
EU limited the Wildcats to a .108 attack efficiency for the match, including a -.036 figure in the first set, while cruising to a decisive decision. The Crusaders won the first five points of the match, then finished the set with a 7-0 run to take command early.
In the second set, the Crusaders used a 10-3 run to turn a two-point deficit into a 16-11 advantage. Tori Lowry recorded back-to-back kills to start the spurt, then delivered a service ace to cap it.
Evangel climbed out of an early hole in the third stanza, pulling away late in the set to put the victory on ice. Gabby Massengale posted four of her six kills in the set and hit .600 for the night.
Evangel will embark on its first road swing of the season with a pair of Heart Conference matches, beginning with a Friday (7 p.m.) night contest at MidAmerica Nazarene, followed by a Saturday afternoon (12 p.m.) tilt at Park.
