The number of inmates at the Greene County Jail whose lab tests were positive for COVID-19 has more than doubled since Tuesday.
According to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, 83 inmates tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. In addition, 29 officers have been tested and showed positive results.
That is an increase of 37 inmates from Tuesday’s report, and an increase of six staff members.
GCSO officials also confirmed that 45 inmates had been tested a second time. Deputy Jason Winston said those inmates had been identified by staff of the Springfield-Greene County Health Department as needing a second test because of their exposure risk.
The virus has been contained to the housing unit where the first case was identified by jail officials. Only a few inmates and staff have shown symptoms of the disease. Inmates are being isolated to their cells to stop the spread of COVID-19.
