Mount Vernon will be without the scent of fresh apple butter in the downtown area for the first time in 53 years.
The city’s annual Apple Butter Makin’ Days, which brings tens of thousands Ozarks residents to the city, was canceled on Monday by the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce.
The event was scheduled for October 9, 10, and 11.
“For the protection of our schools, nursing homes and general public health, we are cancelling Apple Butter Makin’ Days 2020,” the Chamber wrote on Facebook. “We will begin planning soon for the 2021 festival. We look forward to our big event every year and have never cancelled in 53 shows, so a few tears have been shed but the decision has been made.”
The news came on the same day that two major Springfield festivals, Artsfest and Cider Days, also announced their cancellation due to COVID-19.
