The Missouri State University Ad Team picked up a national title from the McCain Institute’s Peer-to-Peer Protective Campaign.
The team competed in a virtual competition on June 23 to win the honor. MSU was one of three universities invited to participate in a virtual competition via Zoom. The competition was moved online because of concerns about COVID-19.
“Competing on a national stage allows graduates to connect with a broader network and I’m excited that some of the team is already in contact with high-profile organizations following the win,” Ad Team instructor Samantha Francka said in a statement.
The win is the 8th national title for the MSU Ad Team since 2008.
The team was tasked with creating an ad campaign on the topic of targeted violence in the community. Team members were required to use skills taught in the classroom, practical experience, outside research, and insight from advisors. The goal was a campaign that highlighted positive self-image, built emotional intelligence, and resilience in youth.
MSU’s team created the K.E.Y. program, or Kindness Empowers Youth, to counter Incel realted violence in communities. Incel is short for “involuntary celibate,” an online community of men who suffer from damaged self-worth because of perceived physical and sexual problems.
“The MSU Ad Team always assembles a magical blend of student talent that is creative, dedicated and hard working,” Tony Sgro, CEO of EdVentures (who facilitated the competition) said in a statement. “Not only has their legacy been firmly established based upon all the previous campaigns they have won, but also today, which is impressive given the extremely competitive talent landscape we see with participating university teams.”
