Residents in the Brentwood South neighborhood thought it was a little odd to see a police SUV running at high speed without anyone they appeared to be chasing.
Moments later, when the vehicle crashed and a man took off on foot, they realized that someone had stolen a police SUV and was actually himself fleeing from the Springfield Police Department.
Investigators say they were called to a series of burglaries overnight in southeast Springfield when they began a foot pursuit with a suspect. The suspect was able to circle back around to where the officers had started pursuit, and took one of the unattended SUVs.
The suspect crashed in the 2200 block of East Rosebrier before escaping on foot. Despite bringing in a K9 and searching the neighborhood, they were unable to find the suspect.
Police describe him as a thin, white male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, and he was wearing a blue tank top at the time of the incident.
Anyone with information on this situation is asked to call the Springfield police department at 864-1810 or Crime Stoppers at 869-8477.
