Two people are dead after back-to-back accidents between vehicles and pedestrians.
Springfield police say that a pedestrian was crossing Chestnut Expressway between Boonville and Jefferson around 4 a.m., in the area of the Springfield Police Department headquarters, when they were struck by a white truck who fled the scene.
A second pedestrian rushed into the roadway to help the first victim when they were both struck by a second vehicle. The victims were pinned under the second vehicle and died at the scene.
The accident shut down Chestnut Expressway during the Tuesday morning commute eastbound between Boonville and Jefferson for the continuing investigation.
Springfield police are asking for the public’s help in finding the white pickup that started the chain of fatal events. The truck is said to have a “small bull bar” and is missing the passenger side mirror.
Anyone with information about the truck or the driver is asked to call the SPD at 417-864-1810 or call 911.
