It’s not the same as full minor league baseball bringing life to Hammons Field, but there will be professional baseball on the green diamond of Springfield.
The Springfield Cardinals were chosen to be the host club for the taxi squad for the St. Louis Cardinals as Major League Baseball opens up for an abbreviated season.
The squad are reserve players who will be called up to play with the Cardinals at the major league level if they are needed because of injury or poor play. Major League Baseball had required clubs to keep their taxi squad within 100 miles of their home park, but special permission was given for the Cardinals to use the Springfield facility.
The Springfield Cardinals said in a statement they are getting more information from Major League Baseball about the arrangement and will release more information in the coming days.
