Clayton Engel from the Drury baseball team is this year’s Dr. Edsel Matthews Award winner for men’s sports in Drury’s 2020 All-Sports Awards.
The Dr. Edsel Matthews Award is the highest honor given to a student-athlete at Drury and is presented to one men’s senior student-athlete and one women’s senior student-athlete who displays leadership, character and have had an exemplary athletic and academic career.
Each year, Drury Athletics announces their end-of-year awards in a ceremony near the end of the academic year. With the campus closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s event was canceled, but the athletics department moved forward to continue to honor student-athletes for outstanding achievements in competition, in the classroom and in the community for 2019-20.
Clayton Engel has been named a First Team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selection twice in three years. Last year, he led the team in hits, runs batted in, home runs, doubles, total bases, slugging percentage, runs, and he was tied for the team lead in triples. The senior from Ozark, Missouri owns a career batting average of .317 and is Drury’s all-time leader in slugging percentage. The outfielder set single-season records last year in runs, total bases, and tied team marks in home runs and doubles. His 61 RBI’s last year is the second-highest season total in team history. Engel has also been named an All-Academic honoree in the GLVC in 2018 and 2019.
Engel plans to return to the team in 2021 after being granted another year of eligibility after spring sports were halted in mid-March. He was deemed eligible for this year’s Matthews Award, however, with four years of work on the field, as a team leader, and in the classroom.
Other finalists for this year’s Matthews Award included: Nico Hadeler (tennis), Isaac Johnson (basketball), Clayton Larsen (golf), and Pavel Semochkin (swimming & diving).
