Springfield-Greene County Health Department Director Clay Goddard announced Monday night the first death of a Greene County COVID-19 patient.
Goddard said the woman was in her 80s was one of the four infected at Morningside of Springfield East, an assisted care center, and died at an area hospital.
“This is a sobering reminder of what we are fighting here, and I mean WE,” Goddard said at a press conference. “It will take each and every one of us fighting against this illness. It will take each and every one of us making sacrifices in the short term so we can flatten the curve.”
Springfield Mayor Ken McClure spoke to reassure citizens that city and county government are taking steps to help prevent the spread of the virus.
“I want to assure our citizens that we, along with our colleagues, are working around the clock to put measures in place to ensure our citizen’s safety,” McClure said.
City officials have been discussing with county officials stricter restrictions on citizens that could be put in place to help stop the spread of COVID-19. McClure said he anticipates an announcement tomorrow.
