Coronavirus Fears Lead to Cancellation of St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Fear of the coronavirus has resulted in the cancellation of Springfield’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

The cancellation of the parade scheduled for this Saturday also includes the Irish Pet Contest.

“After careful thought and much deliberation, organizers of the 40th annual Springfield St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Celebration have decided to cancel this year’s event, which had been scheduled for Saturday, March 14,” organizers posted on social media Tuesday. “We care deeply about the people of our city. We would rather cancel a parade in an abundance of caution than risk doing anything that might expose parade goers to illness.”

The organizers statement alludes to an advisory released Monday by the Springfield-Greene County Health Department warning “high risk individuals” to “limit activity around big groups of people.”

As of Tuesday evening, there were zero reported cases of the coronavirus in Greene County.

“We are sad to have to cancel the parade and will celebrate its return in 2021,” the organizers wrote.
