Hundreds filled the Robert H. Spence Chapel on the campus of Evangel University Sunday to remember the man for whom the chapel is named.
Dr. Robert Spence, Evangel’s third president and a community icon who had been awarded Springfield’s Key to the City less than two weeks ago, died Wednesday from complications of a stroke suffered the previous weekend.
The two hour memorial service was attended by a wide-range of those impacted by Dr. Spence, from Evangel students and graduates, to Evangel Staff, and community members who worked with Dr. Spence on various boards and charities.
Spence served the Evangel family for 40 years as President, overseeing the school’s move to a University, consolidation with another college, and the complete renovation of the campus from a former Army hospital.
“Dr. Spence was a great friend and outstanding leader,” Sen. Roy Blunt said about Dr. Spence.
In addition to those in attendance, hundreds more viewed the memorial online.
The family held a private graveside service after the public memorial.
