The city of Springfield will hold a day of mourning in memory of Dr. Robert Spence in Sunday, February 23, 2020.
Dr. Spence, the third President of Evangel University and recipient of the City of Springfield’s Key to the City, died Wednesday after suffering a stroke the previous weekend.
“it is very fitting for the community to take time to memorialize the life of Dr. Spence,” Mayor McClure told OI. “To remember him, to celebrate his life, to remember his importance to the community. He was a community icon and I’m hopeful all of our citizens will remember him gratefully and take time to remember him.”
Spence, called an “outstanding leader” by U.S. Senator Roy Blunt, served the community in multiple ways beyond his leadership at Evangel, including serving on the Board of CoxHealth, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Springfield/Branson Regional Airport Board.
A public memorial for Dr. Spence will be held Sunday in the Robert H. Spence Chapel at Evangel University. Visitation will take place from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. with a service at 3 p.m. The service will be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend in person.
