Drury players won both of the Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball awards after the first week of the season as Tom Tewes was named Pitcher of the Week, and Jacob Mitchell earned the Player of the Week award.
Tewes was named Pitcher of the Week in the league after setting a program record for strikeouts in a game with 13. The junior from Lincoln, Nebraska, fanned 13 in 6.2 innings on Saturday in Drury’s season-opening game against East Central. Tewes got a no-decision as he allowed only two hits, one run, and two walks as the Panthers won 3-1.
Jacob Mitchell is the conference’s Player of the Week after going 4 for 7 at the plate in two games. The senior from Mountain Grove, Missouri, scored two runs, stole two bases, and had a run batted in. Mitchell went 2 for 3 in the second half of Drury’s doubleheader against East Central on Saturday, then was 2 for 4 on Sunday in the final game of the three-game series.
The Panthers are 2-1 to open the season. They are back at home this weekend hosting Winona State in a four-game series starting Friday at 3 pm at US Baseball Park in Ozark.
