Missouri State Sorority to Welcome Students with Intellectual Disabilities

Missouri State sorority Xi Omicron Iota announced they will be offering full membership to students who have intellectual disabilities.

The students are part of Bear POWER, a program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities to help them make the transition from high school to a career.

“Xi Omicron Iota is constantly working towards being more inclusive, and we hope other organizations will follow,” Xi Omicron Iota VP of Recruitment Katy Millwood said in a press release. “For now, we want to extend an invitation to the women of Bear POWER to join us for recruitment and learn about Xi Om’s supportive and unique sisterhood.”

A student in the Bear POWER program had inquired about joining the sorority last year, so the organization changes their membership bylaws to allow intellectually disabled students. The changes were made in time for the annual recruitment period next week.

The sorority is the first fraternity or sorority at Missouri State to offer full membership to Bear POWER students.
