Fifth grade students with a passion for performing will have a new magnet school opportunity thanks to a partnership between Springfield Public Schools and Springfield Little Theatre.
The Academy of Fine and Performing Arts will take 50 fifth-grade students a year starting in August 2020.
“Each year, we hear from parents and students regarding the popularity of our SPS choice programs,” Dr. John Jungmann, superintendent of Springfield Public Schools, said in a statement. “We appreciate our Board of Education and our community partners, including Springfield Little Theatre and the Foundation for SPS, for making it possible to offer more options to our parents and students. This continued expansion of choice programming is a big win for this community.”
The Academy of Fine and Performing Arts will be located inside Springfield Little Theatre’s educational center, the Judith Enyeart Reynolds School of the Performing Arts on South Florence Avenue in Springfield. There will be two classrooms for the school, a faculty workroom, and use of shared space like a theatre/auditorium.
“Springfield Little Theatre is thrilled to be able to provide a home for this exciting new opportunity for district fifth-graders. We are honored to partner with Springfield Public Schools and so grateful to the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools for its support,” Lorianne Dunn, education director for Springfield Little Theatre, said in a statement.
The Foundation for Springfield Public Schools will also be providing funding and help for the new Academy of Fine and Performing Arts.
