The Greene County Democrats are turning to youth in their choice for a new leader.
The local party’s Executive board voted to hire 20-year-old Sam Smith as the new Executive Director. Smith is believed to be the youngest executive director of a local party in the United States.
“We are excited to have Sam join our team to help build a coalition of young democratic voters,” Greene County Party Chair Wes Zongker said in a press statement.
Smith, a Springfield native, will be replacing Skyler Johnson, who resigned in November for a position with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Smith is a student at Missouri State University pursuing a degree in political science.
“I’d like to revitalize Democrats’ presence in Southwest Missouri and bring a voice to marginalized people in our community,” Smith said in a statement.
Smith will step into his role as Executive Director on February 1.
