Greene County Sheriff’s Office officials informed the Greene County Commission at their Tuesday briefing that the Greene County Jail was at a record capacity.
The total number of inmates in the Greene County Jail system was 984, including 164 being housed in other counties and 266 federal inmates.
The increase was partially attributed to an increase in intakes in the last week. The jail booked 307 inmates while releasing 268. Deputies told the Commission the number usually “runs about even.”
The deputies also informed the commission that Moniteau County has stopped taking Greene County inmates because they are “taking them from a city which is paying more.”
Planning continues to progress on construction of the new Greene County Jail that will have larger capacity. Presiding Commissioner Bob Dixon has said he expects to break ground on the building in April.
