The man convicted in the slaying of Landon Bays is headed to prison for at least two decades.
Khalil Malik Gaines, 24, was sentenced by Judge James Carrier on multiple convictions. Gaines received 25 years for second degree murder, 10 years for armed criminal action, and 4 years on attempted possession of marijuana.
The second degree murder, being considered a “dangerous felony”, will require Gaines to serve 85% of the sentence before he can be considered for parole.
Landon Bays was found dead in March 2016, dumped near the intersection of Catalpa and Douglas in Springfield. He was found without identification, wearing only shorts, suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of the head which proved to be fatal.
The case was investigated for two years before a witness came forward in 2018 proving Bays was picked up by Chad Murphy and Khaili Gaines at a McDonald’s near Sunshine and Campbell.
The two men initially intended to purchase marijuana from Bays, but instead chose to rob him. Bays was shot during the robbery, dumped, and the robbers fled to Arkansas.
After being indicted by a grand jury, Gaines pleaded guilty to all charges.
