The Evangel women’s basketball team came up short Thursday night 83-76 against College of the Ozarks in non-conference action.
The Crusaders dropped their second game in a row as the Bobcats built an early lead. College of the Ozarks would lead by 12 points midway through the second quarter. Sadie Chisum converted a three-point play with six seconds left before halftime to pull Evangel with two at 39-37.
“We didn’t do a good job of executing our defensive game plan tonight,” said head coach Megan Leuzinger. “C of O shot the ball well tonight from the field. We need to learn from this loss.”
College of the Ozarks shot 42 percent from the field as Evangel shot just 37 percent in the loss. The Crusaders did out-rebound the Bobcats 46-37 and managed to make a final run pulling within a point with 6:59 left in the game.
However, the Bobcats answered with an 8-2 run to keep the Crusaders at distance.
“Lexie Vaught had an outstanding game for us,” Leuzinger added. “Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to secure a win at home. We’re faced with a short turnaround as we have Culver Stockton on Saturday with an opportunity to get back on track in league play.”
The Bobcats were led by Abby Oliver with 26 on 5 of 10 from behind the three-point line.
Evangel returns to conference play on Saturday at Culver-Stockton. Tipoff from Canton, Missouri is scheduled for 12 p.m.
