Alexa Willard was selected the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week in women’s basketball Monday after a pair of impressive
performances in road games against Power Five programs.
Willard averaged 25 points per game on 54 percent shooting at Oklahoma and No. 7 Oregon State, knocking down 4-of-8 shots from beyond the arc and 6-for-6 at the foul line with eight total rebounds.
Thursday at Oklahoma, the Lebanon, Mo., native poured in 29 points on 12-of-21 shooting and 3-for-6 from deep, adding six rebounds to help the Lady Bears overcome a 20-point deficit for a 96-90 win over the Sooners.
In Sunday’s Preseason WNIT final at seventh-ranked Oregon State, the senior netted a game-high 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting, adding a steal and two boards in an 80-69 loss to the Beavers.
Willard earned WNIT all-tournament honors after averaging 23.3 points in four games and leads the national with 44 field goals on the year.
The award is the second of Willard’s career after she also won on Dec. 18, 2017.
The Lady Bears (4-1), who are receiving votes in both major polls, return to action Friday, Nov. 22, with a 6 p.m. game against Santa Clara at JQH Arena.
