Storm Causes Ammonia Leak at Springfield Food Plant

A Springfield food plant suffered an ammonia leak early Monday morning following a severe storm that ripped through the region.

Lady Baltimore Foods reported the leak to Springfield emergency officials. The area of the plant on West Junction Street was also impacted with power outages from the storm.

Springfield police and Greene County deputies initially shut down nearby Chestnut Expressway and I-44 as a precaution but reopened most of the area after determining the size of the leak.

One person underwent decontamination and medical attention related to the leak.

Investigation in the building is continuing to isolate the source of the leak for repair.

Update: The roof was taken off the building causing damage to the anhydrous ammonia system according to Springfield Fire Department officials.
