The largest women’s ice hockey event in Springfield history is taking place this weekend at Jordan Valley Ice Park.
The Springfield-Greene County Park Board is hosting the “Missouri Showcase”, featuring six Division 1 women’s hockey teams from the American Collegiate Hockey Association.
This year, the participating schools are:
- Arizona State University
- McKendree University
- Concordia University
- Aquinas College
- University of Utah
- University of Colorado
Arizona State University is considered the “host school” for this year’s competition.
Springfield was chosen as the event location because of its central location for the participating schools. Admission each day of the three day event is $7, cash only.
The superintendent of Jordan Valley Ice Park is hoping that the tournament will help increase interest in women’s hockey. Currently, there are no all-girls or all-women hockey teams in the city.
“We are seeing increased interest with women and girls in our hockey programs,” Jeff Cumley, JVIP Superintendent, said in a statement. “We’re really excited to host the Women’s Collegiate Hockey Showcase. Hopefully, it will help inspire enough women to get involved that we can field a women’s team in the future.”
