The Missouri State women’s tennis team wrapped up the final day of the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships with a title in a doubles and singles flight Sunday at the UNI Tennis Complex.
Dynamic duo Anna Alons and Alyson Piskulic capped their sweep of the No. 2 doubles bracket, handily defeating Drake 8-5 to complete their championship run.
MSU turned in another top-three effort in the first flight as Alye Darter and Ellie Burger won by default over Illinois State.
Moving to singles, Burger highlighted the Bears’ efforts, claiming the third flight singles title with a dramatic 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) tiebreaker win.
The Bears continued their strong singles showing, seeing Piskulic advance to the final round in the sixth flight, settling for second-place after falling to Illinois State in a tight 7-5, 6-2 match.
Newcomers Taylor Shaw and Claire Martin earned third-place spots the fourth and fifth flights, respectively. Both recorded straight-set decisions with Shaw beating Illinois State 7-5, 7-5 and Martin downing Stony Brook 6-2, 6-4. Alons tacked on another top-three showing, prevailing 6-0, 6-1 against Stony Brook.
“Today capped a strong finish to the tournament,” said head coach Mallory Weber. “We saw great efforts in both championship victories and I’m proud of our fight to rebound and capture third in three different singles flights.”
