Man Charged With Holding Woman Against Her Will

A Springfield area man is in the Greene County Jail after being accused of keeping a woman against her will.

According to Missouri Casenet, Joshua Arthel Bedell is being held on $100,000 related to nine charges including sodomy or attempted sodomy; kidnapping; and assault.

Court documents say a woman told police that Bedell held her against her will at his home and would not allow her to go anywhere without his observing her actions, including using the restroom. She said that Bedell had threatened to kill the woman’s mother and child if she did not submit to his demands.

Police were alerted after Bedell allegedly grabbed the woman in a bear hug and forced her out of a local restaurant when she tried to get help from the restaurant staff. After police discovered the woman was wanted on warrants, they took her into custody after seeing her walking down a street with Bedell. Once in custody, the woman told police about her captivity.

An officer examined the woman and discovered her body was covered in bruises. The victim said that the bruises were the result of beatings and sexual assaults.

Bedell has a long criminal record including an arrest earlier this year on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
