St. Louis Cardinals star Matt Carpenter is back in Springfield until Tuesday for a rehab assignment for a right foot contusion.
Carpenter was injured in the seventh inning of a 7-0 Cardinals win over the Pirates July 15th when he fouled a pitch off the top of his foot.
Carpenter met with reporters before Friday night’s game with the Amarillo Sod Poodles and joked that despite online chatter that indicated a large number of Cardinals fans coming to watch him play, he wasn’t tonight’s main attraction.
“Hey, it’s fireworks night,” Carpenter said. “I don’t know if I’m the main attraction or not.”
Carpenter said he enjoyed being back in Springfield.
“It’s nice to be back in Springfield,” he said. “I enjoyed my time playing here. I love the town, it’s a great town, and people are nice. A couple of my favorite places to eat are in this place. My favorite is definitely the City Butcher and Barbecue.”
Carpenter also told reporters that he wanted it on the record that despite rumors, he was the first to discover the restaurant and not Adam Wainwright.
“He’s influenced by me, we need to get that record straight,” Carpenter said. “I was the one that recommended it to him when he came in. He got all the credit somehow.”
Carpenter said he was feeling good in his rehab.
“I’m just getting at-bats, getting my timing,” he said. “I’m hoping to get back.”
