The Cardinals missed their chance to win a fifth straight series as they were nipped by the Amarillo Sod Poodles before a sellout crowd at Hammons Field Friday night.
The game cruised along scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when the wheels came off the Cardinals pitching. Owen Miller singled to left field, resulting in starter Angel Rondon being pulled from the game. Ronnie Williams came in to replace him.
Williams then gave up a single to Hudson Potts. He then walked Brad Zunica to load the bases.
Williams walked Kyle Overstreet to bring home Owen Miller. 1-0 Amarillo.
Williams then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Hudson Potts to score, giving the Sod Poodles a 2-0 advantage.
Brian O’Keefe brought the Cardinals back to within one run with a solo home run to left center field. Amarillo 2 Springfield 1.
Unfortunately, that’s all the Cardinals could muster, and the dirty doggies from Texas went home on a happy note.
MacKenzie Gore got the win for the Sod Poodles, improving to 2-0. The loss went to Angel Rondon who fell to 4-3. David Bednar picked up his 7th save of the year.
