Springfield Public Schools began demolition of Delaware Elementary on Wednesday, part of the first phase of projects taking place under the recently passed Proposition S.
The demolition of the school was suggested because of a number of issues, including asbestos in the construction and the cafeteria and gymnasium being the same room. The original building was built in 1951.
The new Delaware Elementary, which will be on the same site, will have a separate cafeteria area and a storm-shelter able gymnasium. That change and others will allow for better class scheduling and student flow.
The project is slated at just over $23.7 million and should be completed for the 2020-2021 school year. In this upcoming year, Delaware students will attend classes in the former Sherwood building at 1813 South Scenic.
