The Springfield Contemporary Theatre is launching their silver anniversary season this Friday with a production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood in their theatre at 431 South Jefferson, Suite 136 in downtown Springfield (the Wilhoit Plaza.)
The play is a musical based on the last unfinished work of legendary author Charles Dickens. Dickens died in the middle of publishing the novel in serial form, so he never revealed the name of the killer. The audience will vote a the point in the story where Dickens died to decide who should be the killer, and the theatre troupe then plays out the ending chosen by the audience.
In the play, Edwin is a young Englishman who disappears on Christmas Eve throwing the community into panic. Everyone points fingers at each other, and everyone who had contact with Edwin appears to be a suspect in his disappearance…or possibly murder.
SCT began in the Vandivort Theatre in 1995 and moved to their current location in the Wilhoit Plaza in 2014. Their silver anniversary season will include shows like Death Valley: A Love Story; Oppenheimer; and Side by Side with Sondheim (to celebrate Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday.)
