Springfield has landed in the top ten cities for professionals seeking new career opportunities.
The New York based financial website SmartAsset released its fifth annual study for the best American cities for career opportunities and Springfield finished in 10th out of 355 cities.
The website highlighted Springfield’s average housing costs of just over $8,500 a year but also noted that Springfield also has a median income of just over $33,000 a year. Springfield also had the lowest rate of early-to-late career income growth of any city in the top 20 at just 3.73%. By comparison, the top city of Provo, Utah has a income growth rate of almost 36%.
The study noted that larger cities are not necessarily the best places to start a career.
“Instead, comparatively smaller cities with plenty of industry but relatively lower housing costs tend to be the places where you can maximize your potential at the beginning of your career,” the report stated.
The survey looked at seven factors: Unemployment rate, changes in total employment from 2018 to 2019, median income, income growth over time, annual median housing costs, number of career counselors per 1,000 workers and the number of post-secondary teachers per 1,000 workers.
