Springfield Police Investigating Attempted Rape at Missouri State

The Springfield Police Department has told the media they are investigating a report of an attempted rape on the Missouri State campus.

The alleged attack took place on Thursday, May 23, 2019 in Cheek Hall.

According to a 911 call, a female MSU employee entered a women’s bathroom in Cheek Hall. As the victim exited a stall, she was grabbed by a male suspect. The victim was able to fight off her attacker, fleeing both the bathroom and Cheek Hall, and called 911.

Missouri State Campus Safety Officers apprehended a suspect and held him until Springfield Police Officers were able to take him into custody.

The suspect has been identified as 32-year-old Gregory E. Morton, Jr., a registered sex offender and a suspect in other crimes being investigated by the Springfield Police Department.

The Greene County Prosecutor filed charges of First-Degree Burglary, Unlawful Use of a Weapon and First-Degree Attempted Rape. No bond was issued.
