Springfield Police Investigate Possible Murder/Suicide

Springfield police are investigating what appears to be a murder/suicide inside a home on West Walnut Street.

Police responded to 632 West Walnut, Apartment B, around 3 p.m. on Saturday May 18. Police had received a call asking for a wellbeing check at the address with the caller stating a man had shot a woman at the address.

Officers found a male suspect inside who refused to exit the apartment upon the officer’s arrival. A Special Response Team tried to negotiate with the suspect who refused to speak to police or exit the apartment.

SRT entered the apartment after the negotiations failed and discovered two bodies, a male and female, dead from gunshot wounds.

The bodies were identified as 52-year-old Jacqueline L. Steinert of Springfield and 53-year-old Matthew T. Stephens, also of Springfield.

Investigators are continuing to work at the scene but have told media that there is no suspect at large and no danger to the community.
