The Springfield Cardinals were unable to sweep a four game series from the Arkansas Travelers as the visitor’s bats came alive in an 8-2 drubbing of the home team.
The Travelers took the lead in the first without hitting the ball to bring a runner home. Donnie Walton doubled to center, followed by a walk to Dom Thompson-Williams. The runners advanced a base on a wild pitch by Harold Arauz…and then Walton scored on another wild pitch by Arauz. Travelers 1 Cardinals 0.
Travelers blew things open in third inning. Kyle Lewis doubled to center field to lead off the inning and move to third when Jake Fraley grounded out. After a walk to Chris Mariscal, Jordan Cowan forced a single through the drawn-in infield to score Lewis. 2-0 Travelers.
After Nick Zammarelli walked to load the bases, Joe DeCarlo singled to left field scoring Mariscal and giving the Travelers a 3-0 lead.
Aaron Knapp then cleared the bases with his second home run of the year. The Grand Slam put the Travelers up 7-0.
Rehabbing St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez gave up a run to the Travelers in the seventh inning. Jake Fraley was hit by the fastball on the foot, sending him to first. He scored after consecutive singles from Chris Mariscal, Jordan Cowan and Nick Zammarelli. 8-0 Travelers.
The Cardinals picked up their runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Randy Arozarena singled and then Conner Capel hit home run number seven on the year to make the score Travelers 8, Cardinals 2.
The Cardinals now hit the road for a four game set with Northwest Arkansas before returning Monday for a set with Tulsa.
