An 11-year-old girl is dead and two others have been hospitalized after a crash Monday night on Highway 65 that shut down the highway northbound between the Division and Kearney Street exits.
Lt. Chad McIntyre of the Springfield Police Department said that four people were involved in the two-car accident. He said the girl who died was in the front passenger seat of one of the vehicles and that two others involved in the crash were transported by ambulance to a local hospital with what he called “non-life threatening injuries.”
McIntyre would not say if the girl was wearing a seatbelt. He said that it did not appear that either driver in the incident was impaired.
The investigation was continuing and expected the highway to be shut down until at least midnight. Springfield Police are withholding the name of the victim pending further family notification.
UPDATE 5/14 9:40 a.m.
Springfield police say a black Dodge Durango driven by 17-year-old Mikalia Koch of Bolivar struck the back of a Chevy Cruze driven by Clorissa Tilden of Reed Springs. The Cruze then went off the highway striking a guardrail, which is when the young girl was killed. Tilden and a 16-year-old passenger in the backseat were transported to the hospital.
