The Springfield Cardinals gave mama a gift on Sunday, picking a 5-2 win over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Mothers Day.
The Naturals struck first when Travis Jones hit his second home run of the year into the visitor’s bullpen behind the left field wall. Naturals 1, Cardinals 0.
The Cards tied the game in the bottom of the third inning when Conner Capel lead off with a single and went to second on a balk by Naturals pitcher Ofreidy Gomez. Dylan Carlson then smacked a double into the gap in right center to score Capel.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Jose Martinez hit his first home run of the year to right-center, putting the Cardinals ahead 2-1.
The Cards picked up another run in the bottom of the sixth inning after Johan Mieses walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jose Godoy then doubled down the right field line to score Mieses. 3-1 Cardinals.
Evan Mendoza apparently thought what Godoy did was a good idea, so he doubled to score Godoy and give the Cards a 4-1 advantage. Mendoza then went to third on a bizarre wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to center from Jose Martinez. Cards 5 Naturals 1.
The Naturals scored in the top of the eighth inning on two miscues by the Cardinals’ battery. Anderson Miller and Angelo Castellano both singled. Catcher Jose Godoy allowed a passed ball, which allowed the runners to advance to second and third. The very next pitch Jacob Patterson threw a wild pitch, allowing Miller to score. 5-2 Cardinals.
Kodi Whitley came in to pitch for the Cardinals in the ninth and shut the door on the Naturals, giving the Cards the 5-2 win.
