The Frisco RoughRiders had their way with the Springfield Cardinals Sunday afternoon, walking away with a 6-4 win.
The RoughRiders used the sun to their advantage in the first inning, picking up singles and advancing runners because of fly balls hit high enough to allow the sun to blind fielders.
Christian Lopes was hit by the first pitch, and advanced to third when a fly ball to right blinded right fielder Johan Mieses, allowing Eliezer Alvarez to reach on the error. Lopes then scored on a bizarre play, when another fly to right blinded Mieses. The baserunner at first was holding near the bag because it seemed like an easy fly ball. When it fell, Mieses threw to shortstop Albert Triunfel to force the runner and deny Charles Leblanc a base hit. Frisco lead 1-0.
The Cardinals offense responded in the bottom of the first. After Irving Lopez was hit by a pitch, Dylan Carlson singled and Evan Mendoza reached on an error by Frisco first baseman Andretty Cordero to load the bases. Lopez then scored on a ground out to second by Conner Capel to tie the game at 1.
The RoughRiders took another lead in the top of the second when Christian Lopes hit a bomb to left field, a solo shot to put Frisco up 2-1.
The RoughRiders lit up the scoreboard in the third. Juremi Profar doubled to left field and then scored when Andretty Cordero followed up with another double to left. 3-1 Frisco.
Preston Beck then homered to right center field, his sixth of the year, to give the RoughRiders a 5-1 lead.
Then the second fielding error of the game by right fielder Johan Mieses allowed Alex Kowalczyk to reach second base. He advanced on a ground out and scored when Josh Altmann singled to left. 6-1 Frisco.
The Cardinals picked up a run in the bottom of the third inning when Dylan Carlson doubled to left field and then stole third base, allowing him to score on an infield single by Evan Mendoza. Frisco 6, Springfield 2.
The Cardinals offense broke through for two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Evan Mendoza reached on an error by Frisco third baseman Juremi Profar. A single by Johan Mieses moved Mendoza to second. After the runners advanced a base on a Chris Chinea ground out, a wild pitch from Frisco hurler James Jones allowed Mendoza to score.
Then after a walk to Jose Godoy, a ground out by Shane Billings brought home Mieses and the Cards trailed 6-4.
Unfortunately for the Cards, they couldn’t muster any more offense as the RoughRiders picked up their 15th win of the year. The Cardinals fall to 8-16.
