Mayor Ken McClure is officially in his second go-round as Mayor of Springfield and one new Councilman joins the fray as the winners of the April 2, 2019 elections have been sworn in.
At a special City Council meeting, the outgoing Council voted to move all bills currently in process and currently tabled bills to be advanced to the new Council. Without that vote, anything currently being considered by the Council, a Council committee or any tabled item would have been invalidated and no longer able to be considered unless reintroduced to the new Council. (All measures passed 7-0, with Councilwoman Ferguson out of town on a business trip and outgoing Councilman Prater not in attendance.)
Abe McGull is the new member of Council for Zone 2, replacing Dr. Tom Prater. Former City Council member Denny Whayne was in attendance and talked to OI about the importance of Mr. McGull being on Council and providing the perspective of the African American community in Springfield.
“To me, it means progress,” former Councilman Whayne told OI. “The opportunities are now being realized. The door of opportunity is open and the minority community is now starting to walk through that open door.”
The new Council did not consider any new measures. The new Council will hold their first full meeting on Monday night in the Council chambers.
