The Drury women’s tennis team is ranked 21st in this week’s ITA/NCAA-II poll. The Panthers are 12-3, 4-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and winners of five straight matches.
Lynn remained the number one ranked team this week while Barry is ranked second and Saint Leo is third in this week’s poll. Fellow GLVC member Indianapolis is ranked fourth.
Drury returns to action this weekend and, due to the threat of inclement weather further north, the matches will shift to Springfield as the Panthers will take on Truman State on Friday at noon at the Cooper Tennis Complex, and Quincy on Saturday at 1 pm at the Gillenwaters Tennis Complex.
Also, Drury sophomore Viktoriya Zheleva was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Week in women’s tennis for her performance in two matches last week.
Zheleva won both of her singles matches last week and only allowed one point in two doubles wins as Drury went 2-0 in conference play. The native of Haskovo, Bulgaria defeated Whitney Holloman of William Jewell 6-2, 6-1, and Emma Persson from Rockhurst 6-4, 6-1. Partnered with Josephine Jedrychowski in doubles, the two blanked their opponents from William Jewell 6-0 and earned a 6-1 win over Rockhurst’s doubles team.
The Player of the Week honor is the first in Zheleva’s career and is the second such award for Drury women’s tennis this season. JiaQing Mo was named the GLVC Player of the Week on Feb. 5.
