A complete team effort saw the Evangel men’s basketball team start 2019 by earning its first conference win of the season, 89-71, at Culver-Stockton on Thursday night.
The Crusaders trailed 41-39 at halftime as both teams came out on hot starts shooting over 50 percent in the period. Evangel finished at 54 percent in the game as the Wildcats cooled off shooting 41 percent on its home floor.
Back-to-back layups from Jacob Smith with 10:11 left in the game started a 13-2 run for Evangel.
After a timeout by Culver-Stockton, freshman Cade Coffman started to catch fire knocking down a three-pointer to give the Crusaders a 71-59 advantage with 5:41 remaining. Coffman was one of four Crusaders to finish in double figures tallying 11 points.
Newcomer Chris Stocks led Evangel with 14 points and five assists in his first action for the Crusaders after graduating from Three Rivers Community College. Pavel Antonov and Tory Stamps each added 12 points as every player who saw action scored in the win.
Evangel also out-rebounded Culver-Stockton 39-28 and finished with 20 assists for just the second time this season.
Mason Vires led the Wildcats with 24 points as Cullen Smith and Mike Johnson each added 15 points.
