a career-high 22 points and 10 rebounds Thursday evening to pace a
season-best offensive performance by the Missouri State Lady Bears in an
82-70 victory against Louisiana Tech in the
Roo Holiday Classic.
The Lady Bears (2-7) shot 35-for-72 (.486) in the game, with Gitzen’s career outing joined by 19 points from Alexa Willard, and 10 points and a season-high eight rebounds from Emily Gartner. MSU added a 50-31 rebounding edge over the Lady Techsters (7-4).
After 18 lead changes through three quarters, the Lady Bears opened the final period with a Gartner bucket followed by a steal and score by Mya Bhinhar to cap an 8-0 run with a 66-59 lead and 9:14 left in the game. After LT hit one of its 11 treys, the Lady Bears responded with an 11-0 run to pull ahead 77-62 with under four minutes left, holding the Techsters scoreless for more than five minutes, and remained ahead by double digits the rest of the way.
Missouri State led 21-16 after a first quarter that included 10 lead changes, and the Lady Techsters briefly led late in the first half before Gitzen scored at the buzzer for a 39-38 advantage at intermission despite LT burying eight treys.
Gitzen added 12 more points in the third quarter, including four in the last 26 seconds, after LA Tech gained its largest lead of the contest at 57-54 with 2:07 to play.
The nine field goals by Gitzen and Willard each represented career highs, and MSU’s 35 field goals, 50 rebounds and 82 points were all the team’s most this season. Gitzen’s double-double was the second of her career. Bhinhar finished with season highs of six points and four assists.
Missouri State takes on SIU Edwardsville (4-5) at 3 p.m. Friday.
