Springfield City Council will have at least one new face after April’s elections after Councilman Tom Prater’s announcement that he will not be seeking re-election.
Councilman Prater confirmed that he is not running in an email to the OI.
Prater told OI that he would be serving as the campaign treasurer for Abe McGull, a friend of Prater’s will be running for the seat. McGull is a Navy veteran and Assistant United States Attorney.
“I am proud of our accomplishments in the past several years,” Prater wrote. “Council hired Jason Gage as the new City Manager. We passed the level property tax in November which provides funding for public safety, infrastructure needs, and “livability” improvements for our city.”
Prater was appointed to represent Zone 2 after the 2016 resignation of Justin Burnett. Prater then won an election in 2017 to serve the remainder of Burnett’s four-year term.
The deadline for candidates to return nomination packets for the April city council election is January 15, 2019.
